Whatever Charles and Mercedes Williams may have thought about the nature of the trouble their daughter and son-in-law were in, their loyalty to Charlene remained unwavering. The Williamses were initially willing to risk criminal prosecution to help their daughter in any way they could.
On the evening of November 3, 1980, Charles and Mercedes agreed to meet Charlene and Gerald in a parking lot in Fair Oaks, one of the many neighboring suburban towns bordering Sacramento.
Charlene hated to get her parents involved in this, but she also knew that at this stage they were the only ones she and Gerry could trust and count on for badly needed funds.
Gerald also viewed the Williamses' participation with some regret. The incest charges were one thing. This Miller situation was much more serious. He didn't really want to bring them down over this. But what other choice did he and Charlene have?
Even if he had wanted to call his own mother, the police were probably watching her like a hawk. There was no need to cause her more grief than he already had over the years. Or his daughter, whom he still cared for in spite of everything else.
The parking lot was mostly deserted when the Williamses and Gallegos met at one end.
"We're just going to leave for a while," Gerald explained.
"Why don't you turn yourselves in?" urged Charles Williams. "If this is all a mistake, I'm sure we can get it cleared up."
"It's too late for that," scoffed Gerald, a cigarette dangling from a corner of his mouth. "You see, they need a scapegoat for this Miller murder. They will somehow try to use that Butte County warrant to try and make me a killer. I, we, can't stick around and let that happen."
Mercedes regarded her only child. "You both don't have to go, Charlene," she strongly suggested. "You haven't done anything. Why not let Gerry go somewhere by himself until things cool down."
"He's my husband," Charlene retorted, knowing she had a far greater role in this than her parents could ever imagine in their worst nightmares. "I've got to go where he goes. I'm sorry."
"So am I," her mother said sadly.
Charles Williams likely respected and admired his daughter's courage and loyalty, but he had to be equally concerned in saying goodbye to his precious little girl under adverse circumstances.
Charlene kissed her parents and assured them that the police would soon find the real killer of Craig Miller. Then they could return and their lives would be back to normal.
In reality, Charlene knew that whatever happened henceforth, life would never be normal for her again.
The Williamses gave them some money and warm clothing they had hurriedly gathered for the couple. As they watched the Gallegos drive off in the Oldsmobile, Charles Williams must have wondered if he would ever see his beloved Charlene again.
The FBI had joined in on the search for the fugitive couple after it became clear that the Gallegos had crossed state lines in order to escape capture. The federal fugitive warrant charged the couple with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
